Behind the Scenes of a Photographer’s Life: When Admin Takes Over
I’m increasingly convinced that life is arranged entirely the wrong way round. When we’re busy earning money, we’re far too busy to spend it. When we finally have time on our hands, the money has vanished. And frankly, I think we should be born old and frail, secure in the knowledge that each day will bring improved posture, better skin, and a general glow-up.
Yes, these are superficial and slightly ridiculous thoughts—but they’re prompted by the fact that I am a photographer who, this week, has barely touched a camera. Instead, I’ve been enthusiastically pursuing a career in administration, including:
sending invoices
making image selections for a forthcoming exhibition
exchanging many emails about said exhibition
placing photo orders
waiting patiently (very patiently) for contracts to be signed
selecting images for a fine art competition
Now the weekend has arrived. The spreadsheets are closed, the emails are ignored, and I’m joyfully reunited with my camera—which, if memory serves, is the whole reason I became a photographer in the first place. Here I share with you my weekend joy! Note that some flowers faded as they waited for me!
